Skagway 2030 Comprehensive Plan

The Assembly approved the Skagway 2030 Comprehensive Plan and Action Plan in November 2020 via Ordinance 2020-03. This includes the scientific Community Opinion Survey conducted in October 2020 that is a plan appendix. The Assembly approval followed Planning & Zoning Commission approval in January 2020.

It’s been a busy October, including a great Community Open House to help kick-off Skagway’s Fall Festival.

During the September 26 Planning and Zoning Commission’s Comp Plan work session we discussed Public Safety (police, fire, EMS), Public Utilities (solid waste, drinking water, wastewater), and some Public Services (library, health clinic). August 2019 Comprehensive Plan Work Session

Thanks to the 30 or so that came in out of the sun and braved the sidewalks full of woolly bear caterpillars to attend the August 29 Planning and Zoning Commission’s Comp Plan meeting. The topics were Recreation, and, Future Growth/Land Use. There were MANY good comments by both P&Z commissioners and the public. I wish we would have had another hour for discussion, but we were able to cover a lot of material.

2030 Comprehensive Plan Meeting: May (1)

With Planning and Zoning Commissioners, about 25 residents gathered on May 23 to discuss economic development in Skagway. To begin the session, participants were asked “What is economic development?” since there are many definitions for “economic development” and economic development programs can have a wide range of goals and objectives.

April Meeting: Quality of Life & Housing

Along with Planning and Zoning Commissioners, about 35 residents gathered on April 25 to discuss quality of life and housing in Skagway.

     On a sunny March evening, about 35 residents gathered in the Training Room in the Public Safety Facility to discuss Skagway’s future land use with Planning and Zoning Commissioners. In dialogue guided by the consultant team, participants discussed future residential, commercial, industrial, recreation, and open space needs and possible options for addressing these needs: infill development, development of Garden City, rezoning of the land from the bridge to the DOT shops, development along Dyea Road, and development of the land east of the river.

February Meeting: Population and Socioeconomic Trends

On a chilly February evening, about 30 residents packed into the Skagway Library to discuss Skagway’s future with the Planning and Zoning Commission. The work session was part of the ongoing Skagway 2030 Comprehensive Plan process, which encourages community members to share their aspirations and concerns. The primary topics of discussion this month were population and socioeconomic trends in Skagway and the implications for the future. In dialogue guided by the consultant team, participants discussed employment, wages, demographics, and visitors.

Skagway 2030 Kickoff Meeting, February 14, 2019

The Planning and Zoning Commission kicked off the Skagway 2030 Comprehensive Plan process Thursday, February 14. In addition to discussing the process of developing a comprehensive plan, the Commission also brainstormed how this planning process can be successful, what things we should avoid in the process, and what makes Planning and Zoning Commissioners proud to serve on the Commission and to call Skagway home.
